Our (hi)story
1&1 was born in 1988, with the main aim of making information technology easy for everyone to understand and use. Committed to delivering powerful, reliable and secure products, 1&1 engineered its own data center architecture and extensive network, we manage more than 6 million customer contracts and host over 22 million domains in our own regional data centers in the US and Europe, set up their web presence and take advantage of more sophisticated digital services.
This launch of mass-market hosting, combined with years of experience building server hardware tailored for cloud applications, was complemented by strategic acquisitions to create a full-fledged hosting leader. 1&1 cemented its position as the provider of world-class hosting solutions and largest domain registrar in Europe.
Robust infrastructure portfolio in hand, 1&1 then integrated cloud-based digitization applications and tools into its offering, enabling businesses of any size to safely and simply take advantage of the benefits of the cloud.
Becoming 1&1 IONOS
In 2018, to build upon its vision of empowering businesses to leverage the latest digital technologies, 1&1 combined its web hosting, applications and server product lines with ProfitBricks’ cloud infrastructure solutions, becoming IONOS and reaffirming its dedication to innovation and customer centricity.
Proud of its heritage, IONOS will continue its mission: to make powerful technology work for everyone, and to deliver the best of cloud computing.

2023
IONOS goes public
The IPO of IONOS Group SE on February 8, 2023, marks a significant milestone in the company's history. In September 2023, IONOS was included in the SDAX. Since the IPO, IONOS has further solidified its position as Europe's leading digitalization partner and reliable cloud enabler. Our strong and resilient business model lays the foundation for future growth and the development of innovative, forward-thinking technology solutions for our customers.
