Notes on Domains

Recommended Procedure

We recommend that you proceed as follows when changing ownership of an account and the associated domains:

  • Make sure you have all the invoices you need. Invoices that have already been created cannot be changed subsequently.

  • No final invoice will be created. Therefore, check in advance whether there are any outstanding invoices and, if necessary, clarify with the new contract holder who will take over these.

  • Check your domains and determine which domains are to be transferred to the new domain holder. Move the domains that you do not want to transfer to the new holder to another contract that is assigned to a separate account.

For more information on moving a domain to another IONOS contract, click here:

  • The domain contact details are not changed when the customer number is transferred to another person or company. For this reason, you will have to change the contact details of your domains yourself. You can enter these after logging into your IONOS account in the Domains & SSL section.

You can find more information about changing contact details here:
    Editing Domain Contact Details

Make sure that the domain contact details have been changed before proceeding to the next step.

  • When you register, move, or subsequently change the domain holder's email contact address for a Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) , the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires a validity check of the email address registered for the domain holder. This verification is required if the domain holder's registered contact email address is not previously recorded in our system or if you are a new customer. If ICANN verification is required, we will send an email with a verification link to the address on file for the domain holder. As per ICANN requirements, the verification must be done within 15 days. If you do not verify the change of email contact address, you will be notified on the 15th day that your domain will be deactivated. To reactivate the domain, you will need to change the domain owner's domain contact information again.

    ICANN Email Verification

  • If it is technically possible, existing entries at the corresponding registries of your domains will be updated automatically.
We will notify you by email about the success of the update. Please make sure that you also notify the relevant registries of these changes, where this is necessary. Some registries require further contact. These changes may be subject to costs.

  • Current costs are always deducted from the currently stored payment details. Therefore, please update the payment details directly in your IONOS account under My Account > Invoices & Payment Details > Payment Details before you send the form to change the account owner.

  • Download the Account Change Request form to your computer and fill it out completely.

  • Print out the form and sign it. Make sure that the new owner or an authorized signatory also signs the form.

  • Compile the required supporting documents - either as copies if you are sending them by post or as a scan or photo by email attachment. We accept PNG, JPEG and PDF formats.

  • Submit the application to IONOS.

When you submit the application, we will check if the change is possible and then carry it out if necessary. If relevant information is missing or a change is not possible, we will contact you in writing or by telephone. If the documents are complete, you will receive a confirmation by email after the transfer has taken place.

Death

In case of death of the previous owner and transfer of the contract, please send us a copy of the death certificate and the certificate of inheritance. In addition, the written consent of all heirs is mandatory on the change of owner form for the transfer.

Costs

The change of account owner is a chargeable additional service. It will be charged to the new contract owner for $30. The fee is charged only once per account.

Notes on Data Protection

Please change the passwords prior to transferring contracts/accounts to another owner.

Please Note

These passwords are not visible to us.

The page contents of the domains concerned become the responsibility of the new contract holder with the change of ownership. If necessary, the previous contract partner should back up contents locally and delete them from the account in advance. Email addresses and the emails contained within them should also be saved locally and deleted by the previous contract holder from the account. These also become the property of the new contract partner. The previous history of customer correspondence with IONOS remains after the change of ownership. This cannot be deleted.
