ICANN

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a non-profit organization that regulates the one-time allocation of top-level domains (TLD) to persons or organizations and their corresponding IP addresses. It also deals with the coordination of the Domain Name Systems (DNS). Simplified, this means that ICANN ensures that each domain is assigned to the correct IP address and thus can only exist once.
