A step-by-step guide to your first installation

Starting the WordPress installation

Start your WordPress setup simply and quickly. After purchasing your Managed WordPress package, choose “Start your web project” on the confirmation page.
Once you are already in the control panel — the central customer portal for your 1&1 IONOS experience — you can now begin.

Title and login details

Decide what you would like your website to be called and enter it under “Title”. Next, enter your desired login details (a username and password) you will use to access your WordPress blog.
Some tips for creating a strong password to ensure your blog is secure will be provided.

Managing WordPress yourself or with support

If you would like to manage the WordPress installation and take care of plugins and updates yourself, select “Continue with WordPress”. Otherwise, you can choose “Managed WordPress”, and we will take care of all the important plugins and updates for you.
Either way, our setup assistant is always available.

You're set — we'll take care of the rest!

The 1&1 IONOS Setup Assistant will install the WordPress instance and all the necessary databases are set up automatically. A WordPress user is created for you and your language preferences are set. The Setup Assistant also connects the domain you've selected with your webspace directory.
If needed, you can proceed with the WordPress instance installation manually. It is also possible to perform a local installation.
Log in and get started
You can log in to your WordPress page via “Edit Website”, using the login details you decided on earlier.

The key features at a glance

Automatic security updates

If you chose the Managed Mode for the WordPress installation via the 1&1 IONOS Click & Build application, security patches and updates are executed automatically. If you chose Free Mode, you are responsible for the current state of your WordPress installation.
However, WordPress will keep you informed by email if there is a new update available in order to keep your blog up-to-date. The update itself is easy to carry out with just a few clicks in the administration menu of your blog.

Large selection of plug-ins

You can install WordPress plug-ins in Free Mode (a change from Managed Mode is also possible at any time) to expand the functionality of your WordPress blog. Whether you want a visitor counter, protection against spam comments, or your own forum, you can customize the blog exactly to your needs.
WordPress plug-ins can be installed in the administration area of your WordPress blog, or you can download the plug-in directly from the WordPress website. You can then upload the files to the blog's plug-in directory via SFTP.

Change themes easily

WordPress allows you to change the look and feel of your blog with just a few clicks. With ready-to-use designs called Themes, it's easy to fully customize your blog. You can change the theme at any time via the administration interface, or upload any theme via SFTP to the corresponding WordPress directory.

High level of security

In order to provide additional security, the security key (SECRET_KEY) has been standard since version 2.5. The original security key has now been expanded to include multiple security keys, all of which play an important role in encrypting the information that is stored in the WordPress cookies. When you install WordPress manually, the security keys must also be entered manually.
To do this, you can create it under: https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/salt/ and enter these keys into the wp-config.php file. Additionally, special security plug-ins exist to provide further protection. These limit, for example, the number of login attempts in your admin area, preventing criminal hackers from testing various passwords for hours on end until they are successful. Just search for these plug-ins in the official WordPress Plugin directory under "security." Installing the plugin is quick and easy and provides additional security.
