A WordPress plugin is a software extension that makes it possible to integrate new functions into a WordPress website, e.g. an image gallery. With a WordPress theme, you can customize the look and design of your WordPress website quickly and easily. This article explains how to install and replace plugins and themes in WordPress.

Install plugin

Within the WP Admin Dashboard:

  • In the WordPress menu on the left-hand side, click on Plugins > Add Plugin.
  • Enter the plugin name or part of it in the Search Plugins field.
  • Click Install Now on the tile of the desired plugin. The plugin is installed.
  • Click Activate at the end of the installation process.

Alternatively, you can use the Upload Plugin button to use a plugin that you have previously saved as a zip file on your computer.

Install theme

Within the WP Admin Dashboard:

  • In the WordPress menu on the left-hand side, click on Appearance > Themes.
  • Click on Add Theme. All available themes are displayed.
  • Move the mouse pointer over the desired theme tile. Additional buttons are displayed on this tile.
  • Click on the Install button. The theme is installed.
  • Click Activate at the end of the installation process.

To customize your theme, click on Appearance >Customize in the WordPress administration. Please note that the Customize button is only displayed on the tile of the theme currently used in your WordPress installation.
