Valid for MyWebsite Now.

Alt text, short for "alternative text", is used to describe images on websites. This alt text (also known as "alt tag") is used by screen readers for visually impaired users. This article explains how to use alt text in your MyWebsite Now project to fulfill this requirement of the German Accessibility Improvement Act (BFSG).

Recommendations for alt text and accessibility

  • Alt text should convey what can be seen in the image, and how it relates to the content of the page.

  • Purely decorative graphics should remain without alt text.

  • The descriptive text should be as short as possible, and as long as necessary. As a rule of thumb, use one to two sentences.

  • Alt text makes the content of a website easier to understand for people with impaired vision.

  • If images cannot be loaded due to a poor internet connection, the alt text is displayed.

  • It is not necessary to indicate in the alt text that it is an image. Read-aloud programs (screen readers) already point this out.
