The CIFS/SMB protocol allows you to set up a network drive that connects to the HiDrive cloud storage. CIFS/SMB is standard on all Windows systems and is also supported by other operating systems. This article explains how to set it up.

Requirements
  • HiDrive Pro package or another HiDrive package in combination with add-on protocols
  • Administrator permissions in HiDrive or administrator privileges granted by another HiDrive administrator

Activation in Your HiDrive Account

To activate CIFS/SMB in your HiDrive account, follow these steps:

  • Log in to your HiDrive account.
  • In the menu bar, select Settings > Access Rights and Protocols.
  • Click on the pen icon.
  • Activate the Windows Drive (CIFS, SMB) checkbox.
  • Complete your changes by clicking Save.
Please Note

To be able to use SMB, port 445 must be open in the router or software firewall you are using.

Windows can only authenticate one user per server through CIFS/SMB. You can connect additional drives via CIFS/SMB by changing the server address. To do this, insert any string before the path name, e.g. \\user2.smb3.hidrive.ionos.com\root. Note that your entry must be separated from the rest of the address with a period.

Using HiDrive via an SMB connection with an AVM FRITZ!Box

If you are using an AVM FRITZ!Box, the NetBIOS filter must be deactivated for the connection via SMB since it blocks port 445, among others.

To disable the NetBIOS filter in your AVM Fritz!Box:

  • Open the configuration of your AVM FRITZ!Box.
  • If you have not already done so, set up the Extended configuration view.
  • Go to Internet > Filters > Lists.
  • Deactivate the NetBIOS Filter Active checkbox under Global Filter Settings.
