The HiDrive app allows you to automatically back up photo and video files from your mobile device to your HiDrive online storage.

Automatic Backups with Android

If you reinstall the HiDrive app or update it to version 4.11.0, you can activate the automatic backup of your photo and video files the first time you open it. You can also make up for this setting at a later time or deactivate it again.

To manually turn on automatic backup of media files, simply follow these steps:

  • Open the HiDrive app.
  • In the upper-left corner, tap the Menu icon > Settings > Auto upload photos.
  • Select the folder on your Android device that you want to back up.
Note: By default, Android places photo and video files in the DCIM folder.
  • Confirm access sharing.
  • Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for any other folders you want to include.
  • Activate the slider next to Upload photo.
Optional: If your device supports battery optimization, a dialog will appear before you complete your entries. Select Disable to allow undisturbed backing up in the background.
Please Note

Only media files are backed up using this method. Other file types in the selected folders will be skipped. To learn how to create a complete backup of your Android device, see the article Creating HiDrive Device Backup on Android.

Automatic Backups with iOS

If you reinstall the HiDrive app or update it to version 3.12.0, you can activate the automatic backup of your photo and video files when you first open it. You can also make up for this setting at a later time or deactivate it again.

To manually turn on automatic backup of media files, simply follow these steps:

  • Open the HiDrive app.
  • In the menu bar at the bottom of the screen, tap Settings > Upload photos automatically.
  • Activate the slider next to Upload photo.
  • Confirm that you want to share.

If you were previously using an older version of the app, previously uploaded media files will be moved to the Mobile Uploads folder. The previously used Camera Uploads folder will be automatically deleted after the successful transfer.

In addition to regular photos and videos, the following files are also backed up on iOS:

  • Modified photos and videos with the file extension _modified
  • Series photos with the file extension _burst
  • Live photos with the file extension _live
Please Note

On iOS, the background update of the HiDrive app is controlled by the system. For large amounts of data, such as during first-time use, keep the HiDrive app open to complete the transfer as quickly as possible.

Organization of Automatic Backups

All uploaded media files are stored in HiDrive in Mobile Uploads according to the following folder structure:

  • Device: Each connected mobile device creates its own folder.
  • Year and month folders: Based on the date of recording, the files are placed in the corresponding folder.
  • Selected device folders: If you have selected multiple folders on your mobile device, they will be created below the monthly folder.

To include videos in the backup, activate the Settings > Include Videos slider in the HiDrive app.

Use Settings > Upload with to control whether the HiDrive app transfers data even without an available wifi connection. Please note that using mobile data, especially in non-EU countries, can lead to considerable additional costs.
