Migrating Microsoft® Exchange 2013 Accounts to IONOS Mail Business

For customers with Microsoft® Exchange 2013 email accounts

In this article, we'll show you how to migrate your existing Microsoft® Exchange 2013 mailboxes to Mail Business.

Please Note

This guide only applies to Microsoft Exchange 2013 accounts initially configured with a new IONOS email account. If your Microsoft Exchange 2013 accounts were configured using externally hosted email addresses, you need to create Mail Business accounts with new email addresses, and then move the data from your old Microsoft Exchange 2013 accounts to the new accounts.

Renaming Your Email Addresses

The first step requires you to rename the Microsoft Exchange 2013 email addresses being migrated. For this purpose, simply add any text (such as _old) to the end of the first part of the email address (before the @ symbol).

Example:

john.smith@example.com would become john.smith_old@example.com

By doing so, the original email address (john.smith@example.com in the example above) once again becomes available to use in a new email address. You can update your Microsoft Exchange 2013 accounts following the steps below:

  • Log in to IONOS.
  • Click on the Email icon.

  • If you have more than one email contract, select the contract in which you want to perform the desired action.
  • Click on your Microsoft Exchange 2013 account.
  • Update the email address in the Email field and click Save.

Creating a New Mail Business Account

The next step is to create a new Mail Business account using the original email address you renamed in the previous section. You can find out how to do this in the article Setting Up Mail Business Accounts.

Attention

Once you rename the Microsoft Exchange 2013 account, it will no longer be accessible under the originally created email address. Therefore, make sure that you create a corresponding Mail Business account for each Microsoft Exchange 2013 mailbox you renamed.

Transferring Emails with the IONOS Email Migration Tool (powered by audriga)

Now that your email address has been recreated as a Mail Business account, you can begin transferring your emails and folders from the old, renamed Microsoft Exchange 2013 account.

You can find out how to do this in the article Using the IONOS Email Migration Tool.

Setting Up Mail Business in Email Apps

To be able to send and receive emails with your new Mail Business accounts, you will need to delete the old Microsoft Exchange 2013 accounts in the email apps/programs you use. Then, simply set up Mail Business in the same app.
